Swiss National Day is celebrated on 1 August each year to commemorate the founding of the Swiss Confederation in 1291.
The holiday marks the alliance between the cantons of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden, which is considered the beginning of modern Switzerland. Across the country, people celebrate with fireworks, bonfires, speeches, parades, and displays of the Swiss flag, reflecting national pride and unity. Switzerland's National Day is one of the country's most important public holidays.
On this day, many restaurants are open and business as usual, with a few providing special menus for the day. There are also many parties and celebrations you can join, as well as to watch the National Fireworks. For Lugano, they usually have a 30 minute long firework display which is launched from the lake on a special platform.
